SteelGuard XL — Taupō Airport Apron Redevelopment

The winner of the Infrastructure Project of the Year – Small Airport is Taupō Airport, for their Apron Redevelopment

  • While Taupō’s new terminal opened in 2023, the existing apron was outdated and facing serious challenges – cracked surfaces, poor drainage, inadequate lighting, and limited capacity for today’s aircraft.

  • The redevelopment addressed all of these issues.

  • The apron was extended and strengthened, providing extra parking for larger private charter jets and emergency space for commercial aircraft.

  • A new Jet A-1 refuelling area was completely reconstructed for safety and efficiency.

  • Modern LED floodlights and apron ground lights were installed to improve visibility and reduce energy use.

  • The project introduced SteelGuard XL, a surface treatment new to New Zealand airports, to extend the life of the existing apron without the cost and disruption of full reconstruction.

  • Locally sourced pumice material from within the airport boundary was used to reduce costs, lower the carbon footprint, and support local businesses.

  • Aircraft can now park closer to the terminal, meaning a shorter walk and a smoother experience – especially in Taupō’s often changeable weather. The upgraded apron also complements the new terminal and carpark, creating a seamless first impression for visitors.

  • The judges recognised this as a critical investment in the airport’s future, ensuring Taupō can continue to meet the needs of its community and its region. It represents the kind of thoughtful, carefully executed project that keeps smaller airports strong, resilient, and ready to grow.
